Roles and responsibilities preview.

Help your team take the next step. As your team grows, it can be challenging to understand how each team member operates and what tasks they’re responsible for. Use the roles and responsibilities template to run the Roles and Responsibilities Play. Created by Atlassian Team Playbook coaches, the Roles and Responsibilities Play is a team exercise that helps everyone keep track of responsibilities and identify opportunities for growth.

How to use the roles and responsibilities template

  1. 1

    Identify team members' roles

Begin filling out this template by defining what roles exist on your team. In fast growing companies, it’s common for team members to play more than one role. For example, a software engineer might also be a project manager.

  2. 2

    Discuss responsibilities

Once you’ve identified all the roles in your team, use the template to add the top responsibilities for each role. Add responsibilities that don't fall clearly within a role to the unassigned responsibilities section. As you think about responsibilities, focus on the role and not individual teammates. By focusing on the role, the team can identify gaps in what skills are needed to succeed in that role regardless of the people on the team.

  3. 3

    Review unowned responsibilities

After your team has discussed all the roles and responsibilities, go back to the unassigned responsibilities section and review what you added. As a group, discuss whether any of those responsibilities could fit into any current role. Use the template to follow up and assign owners to any outstanding responsibility.
