Automation in Jira is a ‘no-code’ feature meaning anyone can build rules in just a few clicks. Only Global or Project Admins can create automation rules.

Every Jira Cloud instance includes automation at no extra cost. However, there are usage limits that determine how many times rules can be executed per month, depending on the plan you’re on.

Single project automation rules run within a single project in a Jira product.

Multi project rules run across multiple projects, that belong to one or more Jira products. Global rules run across all projects in the site.

Global and multi-project rules help admins unlock scale with automation. Rather than needing to create and edit rules on a project by project basis, this feature allows admins to create a single rule that can run across multiple or all projects in your instance.

Every Jira Cloud instance now has automation as a built in native feature. Only project and global admins will be able to see the automation section. At a global level, it will be called Automation Rules in your Jira menu or simply Project Automation at a project admin level.

Automation is completely customizable. This means you can set up rules to suit your needs whatever they are. Some common use cases are:

  • When your last sub-task closes, then close the parent issue.
  • When a bug fix is shipped, then close all issues and notify customers.
  • When a customer raises an issue in Jira Service Management, create a cloned issue in Jira and assign it to an engineer.

Automation for Jira is now part of Jira Software Data Center 9.0 and Jira Service Management Data Center 5.0. If you’re on one of these or later versions, you don’t need to download this app, as the functionality is already included in Jira. You can find it in Project settings > Automation.

If you’re on any earlier Data Center version, you can download and use this app for free.
